FionaFiona woke up at the first signs of the coming dawn. Far on the east the sky was slowly turning into nuances of pink and orange. She was feeling hungry: it was time to go to see what she could find for breakfast. Surely something from the trashcans the humans were letting here and there. She would have prefered a good and juicy rat, but they were hard to catch now, in her state. She let a small sigh looking at her side, before lifting her up into a sitting position. Then she stood up, already slightly panting from the effort, and heavily jumped down the wrecked car she had spent the night on. At least it still had a fairly comfortable seat, and she was feeling rested. But of course that wouldn't last long, with the additional weight she had now to carry around, thanks to her ex-owners. She pushed these thoughts away: better not to think about why her owners had bought her... At the age of five, this was already her... she counted... seventh litter maybe? At least she had been not so bad treated by her masters, she thought, the litters apart. But for once she would have had them around her. She had never put a paw in the big outside world before a month ago, saved for the garden when she had her business to do. And with this being surely a larger litter than usual, it was making things more difficult as the additional weight on her paws was increasing day after day. After a stretch, she finally moved ahead, her round belly making her waddling. It was doubtful she could catch a rat, but at least there were still trashcans around, thanks to the humans' activities. She didn't like much to have to rummage in it, but that wasn't like she had much of a choice. After some time she found what looked like to be a piece of a half-eaten sandwich and few little cakes. It wasn't much, but it almost sated her already, even she knew she would feel hungry soon again. That was everything her crowded belly was allowing her to eat at once. She wasn't feeling tired yet -or not much rather- and continued to walk around the city's streets. She knew she'd better find another place to rest for the next night. She didn't know much about the infected, but the little she had seen hadn't given her the urge to check at them from closer, and she had fled as quickly she had been able to. As the sun slowly rose and the day started to be warmer, she slightly began to pant, half lost onto her thoughts and search for food. Suddenly she stopped dead, one of her front paws still up: right before her, at a few dozen feet, was a dog scavenging into the trashcans. A male, from what her nose was telling. She hoped the other dog hadn't heard her, but it was doubtful. The once thin and graceful doberman she was had turned out into a pretty clumsy and not so discreet one these past days. Maybe the other dog wouldn't be too much bothering... She stood still, trying to merge into the surroundings, without any significant effect.

There was nothing much to speak of in the metal canister. A few scraps had been found, but nothing worth the effort it had taken to dump it over. What he really wanted was a nice, fat bobcat to work out his anger. The scent of cat spray was practically soaking the dingy little alley. That could do. His tongue fell from his now open mouth, drool pooling slightly at the thought of a good work out with a feisty feline.
He began growling as soon as he heard the pawsteps nearby. With his most recent visitor, he wasn't feeling very welcoming. It took a moment for his nose to register what was past the rubbish. Quickly, Jedi swiveled, his lips peeled back in preparation to leap upon that Umbra dog.
Instead, a female Doberman stood, looking quite worried about his presence. However, her concerned gaze wasn't the first thing he noticed. Her belly bulged while his ribs showed. She was with pup, and in a horrible condition. Had he not just been lectured on the intelligence of wandering around this city by that obnoxious Great Dane? And here was a pregnant female doing the very same. His eyes looked behind her, searching for a male ready to defend his poorly cared for mate. But there was none to speak of.
Jedi had too many questions for her at once, none the same of which he'd asked the female the night before. This one didn't smell of rot and decay. She's not infected with the illness. "Don't you know this city is dangerous? You shouldn't wander around in your condition."
The wolf-dog couldn't say he cared, really. Or at least he didn't want to care. But already, he felt a growing sense of duty. Here was a female already in pitiful condition in a bad situation. As a strong male, it was his moral obligation to make sure she made it to safety.
If she can even make it to safety... She looks like she can barely stand. His chest rumbled with annoyance, more a growl to himself than anything else. "Here, stay in this place until I return. I won't be long."
Jedi knew he would be true to his word when he quickly tracked down a cat. Upon seeing him, it arched its back and gave a lively hiss. Just like old times. The male launched for the feline, his jaws open wide before slamming shut on the cat's back. Compared to the fight the bobcats gave, this had been nothing. There had been yowling of terror screeching down the streets, ringing in his ears, but he still prevailed.
Trotting back to the alley, Jedi dropped the limp body near the female. "Eat. Gain your strength." For one who usually didn't speak, he was doing a lot of it for a female he'd just met. Again, he felt the weight of responsibility. Damn females. They would drive him to his death, for sure.

"Don't you know this city is dangerous? You shouldn't wander around in your condition." When the other dog noticed her and talked to her, Fiona lowered herself, almost looking like she was sitting down, and would have put her tail between her hind paws if she even has had one. At least he wasn't one of these mad dogs, neither he had yet jumped at her, trying to take advantage of her current state. "I don't have any choice, sir," she muttered, her soft voice filled with concern and a hint of weariness. She couldn't tell she has had good experiences with other males by the past, almost just being put in contact with some of her breed when the time was coming. And the less she could say was she hadn't really enjoyed it every time. If she had fought back at the beginning, she quickly had learnt to submit. It was making the things easier with both the other dogs and her masters. Or well, ex-masters now...
The male's voice broke into her thoughts, as he told her to stay and wait for him. She doubtfully pounded about whether or not she'd follow his order, and decided to give it a try. She thought that if he would have wanted to attack her, he could have done it yet, instead of talking. Maybe she had a chance... She looked at him disappearing away, and stretched her paws. Her hind paws had begun to hurt, thanks to the pups growing inside her. And it wouldn't be any better for the next dozen days or so... She wanted to lie down, to allow her paws not to have to hold her full weight, but on the other way she couldn't, not sure about how the other dog had vanished away so quickly.
Finally the male came back, as he had told, and dropped a cat's limp body near her, telling to eat it and regain strength. She gave him a surprised, almost shocked look. She wasn't used to anyone being gentle with her, even less to anyone that bring her food. All her walking had made her hungry, and she soon lied down near the cat's dead body, starting to eat at it. She struggled after a good third of it, her appetite sated. There was a time when she would have been able to eat it whole, but the pups she was carrying were pushing against her stomach, reducing its capacity.
"Thank you sir," she muttered, still a bit confused and fuller than she had ever been since she had let her home behind. She let her go submissive in the front of the male, rolling to her side from her lying position, discovering her very round and bulging belly, knowing she wouldn't become thinner -and lighter- before quite a time still.

Jedi watched from the corner of his eye as the female lay near the broken body of the feline. Not wanting to make her feel pressure, he kept the majority of his attention facing the open streets. As it was a dead-end alley, there was nothing to fear from behind. An occasional car passed, but nothing like the dozens that should have been on such a large span of streets.
Umbra was correct. The humans are hiding. He hadn't wanted to believe it before. But with the evidence right in front of his large nose, there wasn't much he could do to deny it.
The wolf-dog's ears swiveled back at a tearing of ligament behind him as the Doberman worked on the meat. His own belly grumbled irritably at him for giving up such a feast on a morning such as this. There are other cats, he told himself.
"Thank you, sir." Jedi turned, noting a sparse portion of the animal had been eaten. He looked down disapprovingly. "You should eat more. You've more than yourself to care for." The male stood and turned towards her, ripping away a small piece of cat for himself to satiate his angry belly. Quickly, the meat was scarfed down in a single swallow. "Do you know of any safe place?" If she did, would she be wandering around out here? "If not, I'll find one for you."
He paused as he began to step from the alley, expecting her to follow. Should I give a name? He weighed the pros and cons of such. Really, what harm can a name bring? Again, he thought of the very points he made when Umbra had asked. But this one isn't a potential threat. "I am Jedi. And there's no need to do that for me," he muttered, his gravely voice sounded a bit stiff as he noticed her on her side to expose her belly. "In fact, you shouldn't do that to anyone around this place. You've little ones to protect."

Fiona sheepishly got back on all four when the male -Jedi- told her she hadn't to be submissive in front of him. She then sat, embarrassed with her bulging belly in the process. "I'm Fiona," she shyly presented herself. "And i'm too full to eat more for now, although i guess i'll soon turn out to be hungry again." Her tone was almost one of apology, but she knew she actually couldn't eat more. That was somehow a vicious circle: as the time was passing, she couldn't eat as much as she needed due to the crowding, but also was less efficient on hunting due to the additional weight she was carrying around when she should have hunted more often. And she had heard the male's stomach grumbling: him too was hungry, even if he looked like better fed than herself.
Her ears perked when Jedi asked her if she knew a safe place. "Not since my owners have left me..." she said, her soft voice lowering to a murmur. She hadn't called the humans she was living with "master". A master would have cared about his animals, not like the humans that had bought her to make them money, then tossed up aside when the news about the infected had turned out more precise in the distant suburbs. She knew they were planning to leave: luggage and boxes all around the house were an unmistakable sign. But she had never thought they would let her behind... And one morning they were gone. She should have been angry thinking about them, but five years spent in their grip had turned her into the dog she was now. And now, she was wandering in a town she barely knew...
She gave a glance to the male, ready to lower herself if this one would show his tooth. She would have thought Jedi was looking more like a wolf than an actual dog, but... she had never seen a wolf before. She barely have even put a paw outside before, and one could have called her ignorant. And she was. Everything she knew was breeding and being submissive in the front of her owners. Of course she knew few other things, but really not much. Jedi seemed to be kind, and somehow, not able to explain why, she felt a tiny bit of confidence growing in her.

Jedi scrutinized Fiona, searching her expression for any hint that she was lying about being full. Her tone was enough to convince him and he nodded quickly. The urge to be on the move was nearly overwhelming now. He hadn't meant to stay in the alley for so long, but now he had little choice in the matter.
As she told him she knew not of a safe haven, Jedi's intense gaze swiveled away to the streets. There had to be someone who knew of a place for her. He wasn't concerned about himself. If it came down to it, the construction site had worked fine for him. If he had to entertain the Great Dane every night, so be it. But Fiona wouldn't last three minutes there on during the night without his vigilant guarding. He knew he didn't have the energy, nor patience, for such.
"We need to keep moving." And didn't that sound odd, coming from him? We. It had been...a long time since he'd considered the well-being of another animal. Now that he was, all kinds of things were noticed that he never would have paid half a mind to; a deep pothole in the road, a broken bottle on the edges of a sidewalk. There were so many things that could prove hazardous to one such as Fiona. Sure, she wasn't defenseless. But Jedi took on the responsibility of making sure nothing happened to her while she was under his care.
Jedi lifted his nose, inhaling the scents of the surrounding area. The stench of rot and illness was powerful to his good nose, but not overwhelming. It was more like a smog that was always present, but not always noticed. Turning in one direction proved to be a blast of the foul smell. That decided which way to head: the opposite direction.
Turning back to the female, Jedi jerked his head to the right. "This way."

Fiona stood up with few difficulty when Jedi told they should better moving. She was agree, even if her paws still were still hurting a bit. She had noticed there weren't so much infected outside during the day, but that didn't mean none, and staying for too long in such an only place could show itself problematic, if not more. She let a low grunt escaping from her mouth as she felt the pups shifting inside her. She wagged her crop of a tail a bit, showing to the far more experienced male she was ready to follow. As a thought came through her mind, she picked the leftovers of the feline body. A thing she had learnt was to never waste food, and even if she had no place anymore in her stomach for now, she knew she would be hungry again soon enough. That wasn't so much practical, but it would make her at least another meal.
Fiona followed Jedi through the pretty long alley, waddling a bit behind him, her ears and eyes scanning their surroundings and they were walking forwards. Thanks to the cat's leftovers, her nose wasn't much useful for now, as she was mostly smelling it. They finally stopped at the end of the alley, the time for Jedi to take in the scents around. Fiona, for her part, had noticed a puddle of water a dozen feet on a side, and she put the meal's leftovers on the ground. She was feeling thirsty, and the water didn't look bad. At least there weren't wastes on it. She began to drink pretty quickly, and when Jedi told they were heading right, she raised her head, her chops dripping. "Where are we going?" she softly asked him before picking what was left of the cat. "We"... She had never thought there would be a "we" someday, in her world parted between "i", "my owners" and "the others"... She readied her to confidently follow Jedi again.

Jedi listened as she lapped thirstily from a nearby puddle. It was likely riddled with all kinds of nasty things best left unspoken of, but as it was really the only clear spot to alleviate her thirst, the male could hardly argue. He was glad she'd taken along the leftover meat as it meant one less extra hunting trip he'd have to make. At her softly spoken question, Jedi turned back to face her.
His amber eyes held an intelligence other breeds didn't usual have. With his more 'wild' lineage, Jedi carried with him the instincts of a wolf and the heart of a fearless fighter. His looks weren't just for show. He had the potential for great harm, but like his ancestors, he also had the capacity for great love. The pack mentality didn't hold particularly strong in him, but that sense of duty towards a select few could be called similar.
"I don't know," he admitted. "Away from here. Hopefully somewhere more secure." There has to be some kind of place. The whole damn city cannot be afflicted. We are proof of that. "I'm hazarding a guess and saying any dogs that aren't ill will likely be closer to humans, but I may be wrong." The very thought of going near the two-legged beasts left him feeling a little ill. Their kind were not exactly his favorite species. "Objections?"

Her mouth full with the feline's body leftovers, Fiona nodded negatively. No, she hadn't any objections, even if she didn't like much the humans. How could she like them anyway, the only ones she had been in contact with being the same ones that had used her for money? How could she guess not all were alike? But this wasn't a world with much of a choice, even more in her state. And somehow, while she couldn't explain that, she was feeling in confidence with Jedi. That was... a strange feeling for her, who had never trust the dogs she had been put in contact with. She wasn't used to it, but Jedi was giving off a feeling of still strength and truth.
As they were walking down the streets, the sun was slowly rising towards its peak, turning out warmer and warmer. Fiona was beginning to have few troubles cooling herself, the leftovers in her mouth being in the way of her tongue. And she was beginning to feel a bit hungry as well. Nothing that couldn't wait of course, but she felt her stomach grumbling a bit in her. A sudden idea stroke into her mind, and she wondered if she should tell Jedi. She remembered something a dog had told her a couple weeks ago. Pretty far, on the other side of the town, there was a forest. What was that she didn't really know, but the dog had told it was free from infected, at least for the moment... But she had only a vague idea about where it was, and even how far it really was. She thought she'd tell him the next time they'd stop.
For now, they were walking in an empty or almost street, Fiona following Jedi, a bit behind him. They had seen no sign of infected, but also barely signs of human's activity. Only a few cars have passed on the road, and a handful of pedestrians. But there was trash in the street, sign of the still living humans around the parts of the town they had gone through. High above them, the sun's rays were striking, and Fiona was slowly beginning to be uncomfortable with the heat. But she refused to tell Jedi. She knew they'd have to find a safer place before stopping.

Jedi kept a fairly slow pace compared to his usual long-stride walk. He could feel Fiona just at his flank panting around the remainders of the cat she held between her jaws. Tension vibrated along his spine as he kept himself vigilant for any hint of danger. Any humans that were about gave them a wide berth, not wanting to tangle with potential virus carriers.
The stench of virus wasn't as strong in this area, but certainly still present. It was like a mold, creeping slowly so as to be unnoticed until it was already causing harm. The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog swiveled his head around at the sound of sudden pawsteps. A tan, wiry haired mutt was racing toward them at full throttle. Jedi didn't even need to note the golden irises to know this one meant trouble.
The male gave a loud snarl of challenge, leaping between the infected animal and Fiona. The sounds were vicious as the two males met in mid-air, jaws snapping closed as teeth fought to find purchase in flesh. An experienced fighter, Jedi let the dog get in close so he could twist around and grab it behind its skull, right at the junction that the spinal cord disappeared into the skull. A quick crunch severed the nerve and had the dog falling alarmingly still.
The male whirled too late as a second infected rammed into him, teeth burrowing into his thick shoulder. Jedi snarled, twisting out of the dog's attack. Fighting was his bread and butter, and his blood always roared stronger in his ears when there was an actual challenge. Instinctively, he stayed between the dog and Fiona, ready to lay down his life to protect her.
The dog laughed, similar to how Umbra had during the night. It only fueled the fire in Jedi's blood and he launched at the dog. It was less a fight and more a massacre. Jedi had the dog in size and skill. Really, it hadn't had a chance. Though the dog could have ended it faster, he may have taken his time a bit, getting revenge for the wound he'd received.
When finally the second dog lay across the body of the first, Jedi stood stoic above it. He felt no sense of victory. How could he when he knew he would become just like those beasts now? A week. Umbra said I'd have a week. Looking to Fiona, Jedi's amber eyes darkened. A week to get her to safety. He would not fail. "Are you alright?" he asked, his voice as calm as it had been minutes before.

Fiona let the meal's leftovers falling from her mouth as two infected suddenly ran at Jedi and her, attacking him without even a snarl. She saw the fight quite in shock, struggling to control her instincts and staying behind Jedi, lowering into a defensive position. If it had been up to her, she would already have flown... And eventually been killed in the process. She saw Jedi flying towards the first infected dog, and this one dropping still on the ground before she could even realize it. Her eyes widened with fear when she saw the other infected mutt taking a bite into Jedi's shoulder and madly laugh, but Jedi soon slaughtered him down. The whole things took maybe a few minutes, leaving her with heart racing and beating at a frenetic rhythm.
"Are you alright?" Jedi's question reached her ears like if it was coming from miles away. "I-i think so," she managed to stutter, her hind paws shaking from the fear she just had felt. "H-how about you? I saw this... thing biting you..." she asked him back, her voice full with worry, some of her maternal instinct coming on. She stepped toward Jedi, and soon finding herself near him, she gave his nose a lick. She would have rested for a bit after these emotions, but she knew they had to continue forward. And the fastest they would leave the infected now dead bodies behind them, the better it would be. She gave out a low grunt when she suddenly felt the pups moving inside her.
"I've thought about something i've heard a dog talking about days ago, before these attacked us... He said there was a forest on the northern side of the town, free from infected... But that's all i know..." she lowly told him with her soft voice, still worried about the bite. He has to be immune, to have thrown himself into the fight like that, she thought. No dog would have done that if they knew they'd be infected in the process. But what if he isn't and did it only to protect me? It was already a great act of altruism and kindness, and greater even if it would lead to his doom... She didn't know him for long, but she came to the realization she didn't want to lose him, he who had been the first caring dog she had met in her life...

Satisfied that she was uninjured, Jedi nodded. "It's just a flesh bite," he told her, shrugging it off. He wasn't sure how much she knew of the affliction upon the city. From what he'd gathered, she'd been in the protection of humans until recently. He stiffened as Fiona leaned forward to lick his nose in thanks. Jedi had never received any kind of affectionate touch as a pup, and had quickly escaped from humans to seek out a life of solitude. He was too used to living on his own to know how to react. Since he had no clue on what to do in response, he did what he always did in such situations and went on as if nothing had happened.
He looked down at the bodies of the dogs and gave a low growl. They wouldn't be a cause of trouble for them anymore. He began to trot swiftly on his way, hoping the female could keep up. As she began speaking of a place she thought may hold safety, he tried to withhold his annoyance as he turned back to face her.
"This would have been nice to know before." Immediately, he angled deeper into the city. Cutting through would be fastest. We won't make it by sundown. She'll have to rest multiple times, for sure. He kept a brutal pace, wanting to get as far as possible before she'd have to rest.
Jedi frowned as they passed over a grate that led to the sewers. The scent of dog was strong, but not in the way that the others had drawn his attention. Hiding in the sewers? It seemed a logical choice if there was to be a faction in hiding. As they walked, he kept his eyes peeled for an easy entrance. Rather than following his sense of direction to the wooded area Fiona had spoken of, Jedi began following the gutters along the streets.
Cocking his head, he swore he could hear paws pattering about below. His nose lowered to the ground as he traced after it, his paws barely kissing the ground with each pass. Finally, he stumbled upon a fairly large opening that had once had a grate over it. "Let's try in here. Catch your breath," he advised. Quickly, he coursed ahead to make sure the scent of decay wasn't present. Perhaps some part of this day can be salvaged. He raised his voice to shout back down the tunnel. "It seems alright. Come on."

"This would have been nice to know before." Fiona half curled up onto herself in submission when Jedi turned his head back to her, visibly annoyed. She lowered herself, before muttering a little and almost inaudible "sorry..." She only had a really vague idea about what a forest was, and only knew of the general direction of it... Not even how far it was. Her paws were beginning to hurt, but she braced herself, struggling to follow the male's brutal and fast pace. She was soon heavily panting, her belly wobbling left and right under her, but she continued to follow the wolf dog without a complaint. She would have given all she had on earth to rest at least for a bit, but she had nothing... And anyway she was knowing that stopping again was everything but safe.
Fiona gave Jedi an interrogative and bit surprised look when they stopped around some sewer's crates, but didn't asked him what he had in mind. She could smell a scent of dogs coming from the undergrounds, but that wasn't enough to reassure her. She was normally as cautious with dogs than she was with humans. She couldn't tell the dogs she had been in contact with through her life had been kind... But surprisingly she believed in Jedi. And even more now she had seen him fighting to protect her, a worthless dog only good for puppies making... No-one had ever cared about her, not the humans, nor a vast majority of the other dogs.
They finally stopped upon a large and round opening that was sinking under the ground. The sewers' entrance. Or at least one of the entrances. An unknown world among many others for Fiona. Once again she looked a bit surprised when Jedi told his intention to try in the stinking tunnel, but didn't say anything. Instead she took a last breath of fresh air, if even the town's air could have been described as fresh, before following him into the city's undergrounds. She was even more tired than before, her paws aching and slightly shaking under her. Still walking right behind Jedi, she began to limp a bit. She didn't know till when she could continue at this rhythm, but she knew she would have to stop soon. She should have been hungry and eventually thirsty, since the time she hadn't either eat or drink something, but even that was forgotten, overwhelmed by the only goal to continue further onward.

ShadowShadow was silently patrolling into the sewers. He had been into it, as part of Risk's pack, since weeks, but his sensitive nose was still not appreciating the stench coming from the sewers. He had decided to go into patrol, alone for once, and was decided to explore the place further, out of the usual patrolling ways. He wasn't running, but still made his way fairly fast, considering that he had to be careful not to splash everywhere, thing which would have alerted whatever else wandering into the dark tunnels. Pack mates, random errands... or worse, infected. There weren't many things, just tunnels following tunnels, intersected by water drains, widely spaced one from the next. Shadow was wondering how far the tunnels would continue running under the town, and where, if at least there were others, would be the different exits, except the one the pack knew already. Finally, after what seemed to be hours, Shadow decided it was time to return back to the pack's territory, but it wouldn't be before checking the entrance surroundings. He headed back, faster, a bit less silent, but still discreet enough, till he passed near one of the guardians. He exchanged the usual politeness words, asking if everything was quiet around, telling where he had been and what he had found, before heading towards the entrance, this time to patrol for real. He then headed towards the sewers' entrance, silent and alert. He wouldn't like an infected broken into there without him having heard it coming. Suddenly he stopped dead, a paw still above the water: he had heard noises, followed by a voice a few moments after, obviously a male's voice. Then more noises, like if someone was walking past the sewers entrance. He listened at it for a bit, his paw silently dropping on the ground. After few seconds pounding if he would attack or not, he decided not to: an infected wouldn't have entered in the sewers like that. "Who is coming? Name yourself and your intentions!" His scattered and odd voice rang on the sewers, echoing onto it. He remained into a defensive stance, waiting for an answer to come from the other side.

Pleased with the progress they were making, Jedi decided to let the fatigued female rest easy for a while. His pace was slow as he plodded through the water. It was murky, reaching just to the tips of his dewclaws, but it was drinkable if they absolutely had to. Used to fresh, clean rivers, Jedi didn't consider dipping his head to lap at the water for one second. He carried on, pausing to wait for the pregnant doberman every so often.
A sudden voice had Jedi lowering his head and snarling loudly. It echoed as the voice of the stranger's had. Though the male demanded their intentions, Jedi felt no desire to answer such. If he were alone, he would have put down the dog that dared stand in his way. However, he had the female and unborn little ones to care for now. Obligation ran deeper than desires.
Jedi turned to give Fiona a steely look that demanded she say nothing, argue with nothing he had to say. It was for the best if whoever was calling out though they were in poor shape so they would be underestimated if the newcomer proved dangerous. Overconfident strangers usually dug their own graves, in the male's opinion.
"I am badly injured. My mate and I seek shelter from the sickness. She is with pup." Though it was a well told lie, Jedi did not alter his voice in the least. It was not in him to sound weak, and so refused to do so. "Can you help us or not?"
As he spoke, Jedi carefully placed his paws in the water as he moved forward, doing his best to minimize sounds. He crept toward a branching in the sewer tunnels, ready to ambush whoever rounded the bend should they come in an aggressive manner.
